Day to Day Implementation

CEOs can set priorities and articulate company values, but it takes a team to translate those ideas into the day to day work of a company. Which means that you can’t be a socially responsible business if your team isn’t on board. In this episode we talk with Michael Snyder, Operations Associate at a mission-driven company about how he lives into company values like partnership, humility, and nimbleness in everything from planning meetings and events to technology and physical office space.

The company Michael works for has a clear set of core values that he saw in writing from day one, including “Belonging.” Michael shared some of his thinking and decision-making in key areas of running a business in a way that reflects those core values, including:

  • Planning work celebrations that incorporate community-based locations, non-alcoholic drink options, and with invitations that feature inclusive language to accommodate family, friends and significant others of all kinds.

  • Ordering food from social enterprises and caterers from underrepresented communities, and ensuring that food allergies and dietary restrictions don’t keep someone from having delicious options.

  • Securing corporate gifts from employment social enterprises like those that might be featured on the Procure Impact platform.

  • Thinking through technology interfaces and how they can be made accessible to all users.

  • Creating flexible office policies that work for everyone to be able to show up as their best selves.

  • Welcoming interns from communities that are underrepresented in the industry to give them an entry point and some early experience.

Michael’s advice for those who are ready to do the Next Right Thing? Focus on authenticity. “If you want to bring your team to the next level, bring that authenticity.”
